Germany Vs Scotland Reaction

Scotland suffer heavy defeat to Germany in Euro 2024 opener

Tartan Army left frustrated as 10-man side fails to have a shot on target

Scotland's Euro 2024 campaign got off to a disappointing start on Friday night as they were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Germany in their opening match of the tournament.

Steve Clarke's side were reduced to 10 men after just 25 minutes when Nathan Patterson was sent off for a reckless challenge on Germany's Leroy Sane.

The Germans took full advantage of their numerical advantage, with Timo Werner opening the scoring just five minutes later.

Ilkay Gundogan doubled the lead midway through the second half, before Niclas Fullkrug added a third in the closing stages.

The defeat leaves Scotland bottom of Group F, with just one point from their opening two matches.

Reaction from the Scotland camp

Steve Clarke, Scotland manager: "We're very disappointed with the result tonight. We knew it was going to be a tough game, but we didn't show enough quality in the final third.

Nathan Patterson, Scotland defender: "I'm gutted to have been sent off. I know it was a bad challenge, but I didn't mean to hurt Leroy Sane.

Billy Gilmour, Scotland midfielder: "We need to pick ourselves up and go again. We've got two more games in the group and we need to win them both to have any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages."
